Shimelis Adugna has been president of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society since April 2000 and currently serves as the Vice President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for Africa. He also serves as national coordinator for Jobs for Africa, an employment generation and poverty reduction program of the International Labor Organization and the United Nations Development Program.
In the past, Shimelis served as minister of labor and social affairs. Ambassador to the Republic of India; and vice-minister of the Interior in charge of correctional institutions. Shimelis has also worked as an independent consultant and government advisor on issues of famine, demobilized soldiers, and orphans.
