U.S. Embassy Sponsors Ethiopia Premiere of the Film “Lamb” (Press Release)

(Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Sept 4, 2015)  The U.S. Embassy Addis Ababa on a press briefing sent to Dire Tube announced it has sponsored the premiere in Ethiopia of “Lamb,” the first Ethiopian film ever to be screened as an “Official Selection” at the Cannes Film Festival. Lamb is the first Ethiopian film to be screened as an “Official Selection” at the Cannes Film Festival the Embassy is proud to sponsor it, the announcement said.

The press statement said ‘Lamb’ is a new film by the Ethiopian-American filmmaker Yared Zeleke. It explores issues of displacement and loss while juxtaposing these concerns against breathtaking landscapes of Ethiopia, inside traditional homes, and against changing urban settings.

Lamb tells the tale of nine-year-old Ephrem and his constant companion, a sheep named Chuni, where Ephrem’s affection for Chuni deepens after he loses his mother. Consequently, his father sends him and Chuni to a place far away from their drought-stricken homeland. When his uncle orders him to slaughter Chuni for the upcoming holiday feast, Ephrem devises a scheme to save the sheep and return to his father's home.

Yared Zeleke is the first Ethiopian to attend the New York University Film School, one of the most prestigious film schools in the world, and is the first Ethiopian filmmaker to present an Ethiopian film at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film has won praise at the Cannes Film Festival, also gaining write-ups in the Daily Monitor in Ethiopia, the New York Times, the Guardian, as well as coverage on BBC, CNN, and other media outlets.

Lamb will premiere in Ethiopia at the National Theater on Thursday, September 10, 2015 and will be in theaters in Addis Ababa the following week the Embassy’s statement added.
