Addis Ababa September 15/2012 Government Communication Affairs Office (GCAO) State Minister Shimelis Kemal said Ethiopia has given guarantee to freedom of press, which is enshrined in its constitution. Speaking at a workshop on safety of African journalists, Shimelis said the country is exerting utmost efforts to implement Article 29 of the constitution, which states the right of thought, opinion and expression without any restriction.
The Minister said the government will provide the necessary support to journalists with a view to enabling them undertake journalistic activities without any threat.
He said Ethiopia works closely with agencies, which ensure the rights of journalists and also guarantee journalistic works.
The two-day workshop created forum for participants to share experiences on issues related to the challenges of African journalists and ways to find solution.
Participants of the workshop also discussed on ways to establish joint forum of the United Nations and the African Union Commission with a view to creating situation enabling journalists undertake their activities smoothly.
The Federation of African Journalists, the African Union Commission, UNESCO and Ethiopian National Journalists Union organized the workshop.
