A Very controversial gay conference, which began here in the Ethiopian capital despite an uproar from the public and religious leaders, has generated a lot of buzz on social networking platforms like Facebook and discussions on DireTube to ban the Conference.

According to the Poll collected for 48 Hours 85% Voted Against the Conference from being held. Here is a graphical data of the Result of the Vote collected. 6% of the vote collected shows a support for the conference to be held in Ethiopia.

A 2007 Global Attitudes survey on the subject revealed that 97 percent of Ethiopians believed homosexuality should be rejected by society, which was the second highest among the 44 countries surveyed, exceeded only by Mali with 98 percent.

On Nov 29, religious leaders called a press conference to denounce the gay meet that led to a dispute with government authorities.

A meeting between Health Minister Tewodros Adanom and religious leaders from the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, the Ethiopian Orthodox, Catholic and Evangelical churches ended in a dispute on how to, and whether or not to, ban the gay conference.

Speakers at the conference would reportedly include UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidibe, US Global AIDS Coordinator Eric Goosby, and the current chairperson of the Committee for the Protection of the rights of people living with HIV, Reine Alapini-Gansou.

The speakers would discuss health and human rights issues faced by gays, including the issue of criminalisation of same sex practices.

Ethiopia's criminal law strictly prohibits any form of homosexuality on the ground that it is against the country's cultural norms.

'Homosexual or same sex marriage and unethical activities in the country are considered criminal and the person who engages in such activity would be sentenced to three to 10 years' imprisonment,' the law states.

Thank you Enlightened, you truly merited your username. Liberty always triumps. Reason always wins. I'd give it a generation or so once our country starts to prosper. Ideally we would get rid of religion altogether

@LILI, you don't know what you're talking about. I do HIV research at my medical school I go to. I can asure HIV prevalence is not that high. Oh and look http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/factsheets/u s.htm Center of Disease control agrees with me. So... What proof do you have for that claim.
Gays are more affected by HIV, this meeting will only bring good, whether you like gays or not

@habesha, just what exactly has your hatred accomplished? You are causing to pain to people who have no other choice but be gay. If gay is a choice, can you choose to be gay just for a second? Try it. Honestly. It's like hating people for being left handed.

This is in response to what Hailu said in his comments below..that there are 35 million gays in US only and there are thousands more who are gays but refuse to call themselves that (they foolishly call themselves "on-the-down-low"). Anyway, point is...we know there are 35 million gays in US which is why AIDS IS ON THE RISE AGAIN. I work @ an AIDS hospice so I know...

Do not be on the wrong side of History.

GHANA REFUSES TO GRANT GAYS’ RIGHTS DESPITE AID THREAT
Ghana’s president John Atta Mills has rejected the UK’s threat to cut aid if he refuses to legalise homosexuality.
Mr Atta Mills said the UK could not impose its values on Ghana and he would never legalise homosexuality.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron Said at the weekend that aid would be cut to countries which failed to respect gay rights.

    31 October 2011
UGANDA FURY AT DAVID CAMERON AID THREAT OVER GAY RIGHTS
The UK is showing a “bulling mentality” by threatening to cut aid to countries where homosexuality is illegal, a Ugandan official says.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said at the weekend that those receiving British aid should respect gay rights
But Ugandan president adviser John Nagenda told the BBC Ugandan were “tired of these lectures” and should not be treated like “children”.

I have a word for our government UK can keep their aid money. Ethiopia is allies with UK to work together, they shouldn’t bully as like a bunch of useless. Regarding working as allies they need as more than we need them. Above all they should respect our value. As we don’t tell them in their own internal affairs at the same time they shouldn’t give as order in our internal affairs.

MARANATA, if you read Ethiopian history, Kings and Queens fallow the Holy Bible as a guide to rule and govern the people of Ethiopian and made decision asking the Orthodox Church first and pray before they finalized they decision. Because of the separation of politics and churches (Orthodox) that we are facing all kind of problem. Poverty, diseases and hate among Ethiopians. I happy they stop it.

State and religion should be and are separated in Ethiopia. If everytime such contraversial occasions happen the government seeks the intervention of religious leadrs, then better we call our country an islamic or a christian nation. It's not up to them to decided any governmental issues.
